the watershed – Chris Armstrong and Craig Fardell
This was one of the most beautiful projects I have had the privilege to work on.
Chris and Craig would have to be two of the most intrepid people I know. You only have to look at their blog A Wild Land to get the picture. They spend most of their time exploring the remote and untamed parts of Australia. Their hikes are often off trail and while exploring and immersing themselves in the sacred wild, they record these experiences with photography and poetry.
Chris approached me to design her first collection of poems when she discovered that I also share their love for hiking and the outdoors.
It’s not often you get to a job this good. I really wanted to pour my heart and soul into this project as I instantly felt a synergy with Chris and what she was trying to achieve.
In the world of poetry publishing, the first book issued is known as a ‘Chapbook’. This is usually a small print run and produced by hand. I suggested that the book be French folded and have stitching used in Japanese book binding.
With the combination of inspired poetry, beautiful images and care a quality in the design, typography and binding, this publication was only ever going to be stunning.
